About NEET

Exam structure
NEET UG is a single 200-minute pen-and-paper (OMR) examination conducted by the NTA. • 200 questions in total, of which 180 must be answered. • Biology carries 90 questions (Botany 45, Zoology 45), Physics 45 and Chemistry 45. • Each subject is split into Section A (35 compulsory questions) and Section B (15 questions of which 10 are attempted). • Total marks: 720. • All questions are single-correct MCQs; there is no descriptive component and no on-screen calculator. The syllabus is drawn from NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Grading & scoring
Marking is +4 for a correct answer, −1 for an incorrect answer and 0 for an unattempted question, out of 720 marks. Ranks are decided on the total score, with tie-breaks applied in the order Biology score, Chemistry score, then fewer incorrect attempts. This makes attempt discipline part of your rank: two candidates with identical knowledge can be separated by 40 marks purely through guessing behaviour. A worked NEET question, step by step
NEET Physics: A body starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 4 m s⁻². What distance does it travel in the 5th second of its motion?
- 1Recognise the question type: distance in the nth second, not total distance in n seconds. This is the trap.
- 2Use the nth-second formula: Sₙ = u + (a/2)(2n − 1).
- 3Substitute u = 0, a = 4, n = 5: S₅ = 0 + (4/2)(2×5 − 1).
- 4Simplify: S₅ = 2 × 9 = 18.
- 5Check the unit: acceleration in m s⁻² and time in seconds gives a distance in metres.
