About JEE Main

JEE Main is the NTA's computer-based entrance test for NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, and the qualifying gate for JEE Advanced. It is held in two sessions each year, and the better of the two NTA scores is used — which means the January attempt is a real diagnostic, not a rehearsal. Exam structure

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) is a 3-hour computer-based test conducted by the NTA in two sessions per year. • Three subjects — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — of 25 questions each. • Each subject has 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value questions. • Total marks: 300. • On-screen calculator is not provided; rough sheets are. • Scores are normalised across shifts, and the better of your two session NTA scores is used for ranking.

Grading & scoring

Marking is +4 for correct and −1 for incorrect on multiple-choice questions. Numerical-value questions in the current pattern carry +4 with no negative marking, which makes them free attempts worth never skipping. Ranks are published as NTA percentile scores normalised across shifts, and the JEE Advanced cut-off is drawn from that percentile. Because normalisation compares you against your own shift, consistency across full-length mocks is a better predictor than any single score. Exam strategy & time management

A worked JEE Main question, step by step

JEE Main Mathematics: If the line y = mx + 1 is tangent to the parabola y² = 4x, find the value of m.
