About CBSE
CBSE is India's largest school board and the syllabus behind most national entrance exams, so how you prepare for it affects far more than one report card. The board paper itself has changed considerably: competency-based questions, case-study questions and assertion-reason items now carry substantial weight, while pure recall carries less than it once did. CBSE marking is stepwise and specific. The official marking scheme allocates marks to individual steps — formula, substitution, calculation, unit — and to specific keywords in theory answers. A student who knows the concept but writes a compressed answer routinely scores lower than one who knows less but writes it the way the scheme expects. Exam structure
CBSE board examinations are held annually, typically from mid-February. • Class 10 and Class 12 theory papers are usually 80 marks with 20 marks of internal assessment or practical work. • Papers are divided into sections by mark weight — very short answer (1 mark), short answer (2–3 marks), long answer (5 marks) and case-study based questions. • Competency-based questions, including assertion-reason and case-study items, form a substantial share of the paper. • Duration is 3 hours plus 15 minutes of reading time. • Sample papers and the marking scheme are published by CBSE each year and define the exact section structure.
Grading & scoring
CBSE reports marks per subject along with a grade, and awards marks strictly against a published marking scheme. The scheme is stepwise: in Mathematics and the sciences, marks are attached to the formula, the substitution, the computation and the unit, so partial credit is available even when the final answer is wrong. In theory answers, marks attach to specific keywords and points — an answer missing the expected term loses that mark even if the surrounding explanation is correct. Diagrams carry independent marks and must be labelled. A worked CBSE question, step by step
CBSE Class 12 Physics (3 marks): A 2 μF capacitor is charged to 200 V. Calculate the charge stored and the energy stored in the capacitor.
- 1List given values with units: C = 2 μF = 2 × 10⁻⁶ F, V = 200 V.
- 2State the formula for charge: Q = CV.
- 3Substitute: Q = 2 × 10⁻⁶ × 200 = 4 × 10⁻⁴ C.
- 4State the formula for energy: U = ½CV².
- 5Substitute: U = ½ × 2 × 10⁻⁶ × (200)² = 4 × 10⁻² J.
- 6Write both final answers with units: Q = 4 × 10⁻⁴ C and U = 0.04 J.
Answer: Q = 4 × 10⁻⁴ C; U = 4 × 10⁻² J (0.04 J).
How the marks are awarded: 1 mark: Q = CV stated and substituted. 1 mark: correct charge with unit C. 1 mark: U = ½CV² with correct value and unit J. Marks are lost for missing units or for omitting the formula line.
