About JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the IIT entrance examination, sat only by candidates who clear the JEE Main cut-off. It is a different test in character from Main: fewer questions, far more depth per question, and question formats designed to punish partial understanding — multi-correct options, matrix matching, paragraph-linked sets and integer-value answers. The syllabus overlaps with JEE Main, but the treatment does not. Exam structure

JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs and consists of two compulsory papers on the same day. • Paper 1 and Paper 2, three hours each, both computer-based. • Each paper covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. • Question types vary year to year and include single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, numerical/integer answers, matrix-match and paragraph-based sets. • Partial marking applies to multiple-correct questions; selecting any wrong option forfeits the whole question. • Total marks and the exact pattern are announced each year, so pattern flexibility is itself part of the preparation.

Grading & scoring

Advanced uses a mixed marking scheme. Single-correct questions carry full marks with negative marking; numerical-answer questions typically carry no negative marking; multiple-correct questions award partial marks for each correct option identified, but any incorrect selection reduces the score to zero for that question. Ranks are computed on the aggregate of both papers, with subject-wise minimum qualifying marks that must be met independently — a candidate can clear the aggregate and still fail on a single subject cut-off. IIT setters design distractors around the most common conceptual error, not around arithmetic slips. If an option looks immediately obvious on an Advanced question, treat that as a signal to check the assumption behind it.

A worked JEE Advanced question, step by step

JEE Advanced Physics (multiple correct): A uniform solid cylinder rolls without slipping down a fixed incline of angle θ. Which statements are correct?

  1. 1Set up: rolling without slipping means a = Rα and friction is static, so it does no work.
