Exam structure

ICSE Class 10 papers are conducted by the CISCE, usually across February and March. • Most subjects carry 80 marks of written paper plus 20 marks of internal assessment / project work. • Mathematics is a single 2½-hour paper; Section A is compulsory and Section B offers a choice of questions. • Science is split into three separate papers — Physics, Chemistry and Biology — each of 2 hours, each with a compulsory Section A of short answers and a choice-based Section B. • English is two papers: English Language (composition, letter, comprehension, grammar) and Literature in English. • History & Civics and Geography are separate papers, with Geography including compulsory map work on a Survey of India toposheet. • Reading time of 15 minutes is given before writing begins and cannot be used for writing.

Grading & scoring

ICSE reports percentage marks per subject rather than a grade letter, and the certificate shows the best-of subject aggregate used by most Class 11 admissions. Marking is stepwise. In Mathematics and the sciences, method marks are available even when the final answer is wrong — provided the working, formula and units are shown. In Literature and History & Civics, marks are awarded per valid point with textual or factual support, which is why bullet-thin answers underperform. In Geography, map marks are awarded strictly for correctly located and correctly labelled features.
