About OCR

OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations) is one of the three major UK exam boards, historically associated with Cambridge Assessment. It is popular for its mathematics offering (particularly MEI, the Mathematics in Education and Industry variant), sciences and computer science, where its A Level specification is widely considered the most demanding. Exam structure

OCR A Levels have 3 papers of ~2h 15m each and a non-examined assessment in some subjects (e.g. computer science). GCSEs have 2 papers of 1h 30m each. All exams are sat at the end of the course (linear).

Grading & scoring

OCR GCSEs are graded 9–1, A Levels A*–E. Grade boundaries are published on the OCR website on results day.

Exam strategy & time management

  • 1Read the command word first — 'state', 'explain', 'evaluate' and 'discuss' each demand a different depth.
  • 2Use ~1 minute per mark as a pacing baseline and mark questions to return to rather than stalling.
  • 3Show every step in maths and physics — mark schemes award method (M1/M2) marks even when the final answer is wrong.
  • 4Quote data, dates or equations directly from the question to trigger 'application' marking points.
  • 5Leave 5–10 minutes at the end to check units, significant figures and unanswered parts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the command word and writing a generic answer.
  • Losing marks by omitting units, direction or significant-figure rounding.
  • Confusing 'describe' (what happens) with 'explain' (why it happens).
  • Skipping working in calculation questions and losing method marks.
  • Running out of time on 6-mark extended questions at the end of the paper.

OCR FAQ

OCR A or OCR B — which should I choose?

Both are equally recognised. OCR B (MEI) has a more applied, industry-focused approach in maths and further maths. Jarvis supports both.

Is OCR A Level Computer Science hard?
