About AS Level
AS Levels are stand-alone Level 3 qualifications, worth 40% of a full A Level in terms of UCAS tariff points but no longer counting toward the final A Level grade under the linear reform. Students typically sit AS Levels at the end of Year 12 either to demonstrate progress before A2, to keep options open for university, or as an alternative to a fourth full A Level. Exam structure
AS Levels are assessed by 1–2 written papers of 1h 30m each, sat entirely in Year 12. Papers are shorter and less synoptic than full A Level papers and do not include the extended 'evaluate' or 'discuss' questions worth 20+ marks.
Grading & scoring
AS grades run A–E with a U (there is no A* at AS). Boundaries follow the same annual review process as A Level and are published on results day.
Exam strategy & time management
- 1Read the command word first — 'state', 'explain', 'evaluate' and 'discuss' each demand a different depth.
- 2Use ~1 minute per mark as a pacing baseline and mark questions to return to rather than stalling.
- 3Show every step in maths and physics — mark schemes award method (M1/M2) marks even when the final answer is wrong.
- 4Quote data, dates or equations directly from the question to trigger 'application' marking points.
- 5Leave 5–10 minutes at the end to check units, significant figures and unanswered parts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Ignoring the command word and writing a generic answer.
- ✕Losing marks by omitting units, direction or significant-figure rounding.
- ✕Confusing 'describe' (what happens) with 'explain' (why it happens).
- ✕Skipping working in calculation questions and losing method marks.
- ✕Running out of time on 6-mark extended questions at the end of the paper.
AS Level FAQ
Do AS Level grades count towards my A Level?
No — under the linear reform AS Level grades are stand-alone and do not contribute to the final A Level grade. They still carry UCAS tariff points and appear on your transcript.
Should I sit AS Levels?
Sit them if you want a formal Year 12 qualification to strengthen university applications or to keep a subject open for one year before dropping it in Year 13.
Is the AS content the same as the first half of A Level?
Roughly, but not exactly — some topics (like advanced integration or synoptic essays) are A2-only. Jarvis knows the AS/A2 split for each board.
